DSG, Mechatronic & Transmission Repairs in Oakleigh, Melbourne
A gearbox fault feels expensive before you even know what it is. Jerky shifts. A warning light. A car that won't pull away. Then a quote that says "replace the gearbox." Before you agree to that, get the fault properly diagnosed. Sometimes the problem sits in one component, not the whole gearbox.
At Auto Union, we diagnose DSG, S tronic and automatic gearbox faults on Audi, Volkswagen, Skoda and Porsche.
Signs your transmission needs attention...
Transmission and gearbox problems rarely arrive overnight. Watch for:
-
Jerky or hard gear changes
-
Shuddering when you pull away
-
A delay when you select Drive or Reverse
-
A gearbox warning light or message on the dashboard
-
Slipping, where the engine revs but the car doesn't speed up
-
Limp mode, where the car holds one or two gears only
-
Whining, clunking or grinding noises
One of these doesn't always mean a major repair. It does mean get it checked. Driving on a faulty gearbox can turn a small job into a bigger one

What is a mechatronic unit?
It's the gearbox's brain and nervous system. A small computer and a set of electronic valves sit inside the transmission. They decide when to change gear and control the pressure that makes it happen.
Audi calls its version of this gearbox S tronic. Volkswagen and Skoda call it DSG. Both are dual-clutch gearboxes: two clutches working together for fast, smooth shifts. Some BMW models use a dual-clutch gearbox too.
When the mechatronic unit develops a fault, you feel it in the way the car drives.

Transmission repair questions, answered.
1 / How do I know if my DSG or mechatronic unit is failing?
Look for jerky shifts, shuddering when you pull away, delays selecting Drive, a gearbox warning light or limp mode. These signs point to a problem, but only a diagnostic scan and inspection confirms the cause.
2 / Can you fix it without replacing the whole gearbox?
Sometimes. It depends on what the diagnosis finds. If the fault is in the mechatronic unit or a related part, a full gearbox replacement may not be needed. If there's internal damage, we'll show you and explain your options.
3 / Is it safe to keep driving with a gearbox warning light on?
We don't recommend it. Get the car checked soon. If it's in limp mode, shuddering badly or making grinding noises, stop driving and arrange a tow. Continued driving can add damage.
4 / How often does a DSG need servicing?
It varies by gearbox. Many wet-clutch DSG gearboxes have a fluid and filter service at around 60,000 km. Check your logbook, or ask us to confirm the interval for your car.
